This section contains information about the National Qualifications framework, QQI and about grades and criteria for QQI accredited programmes.
QQI is an independent State agency established by the Quality Assurance and Qualifications Education and Training) Act 2012. The Minister for Education and Skills appoints the QQI board.
QQI’s role is to:
Promote, maintain and develop the Irish National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) the 10-level framework for the development, recognition and awarding of qualifications in Ireland
Review the effectiveness of quality assurance procedures of further and higher education providers for programmes leading to qualifications in the NFQ. Quality assurance means that both your education or training programme and the education provider (Chevron Training Ltd) are reviewed on a regular basis
Validate education and training programmes and make awards for providers in the further education and training and higher education sectors
Provide advice on the recognition of Irish qualifications abroad and the recognition of foreign qualifications in Ireland
The NFQ describes what learners need to know, understand and be able to do to achieve a qualification. It lists the main qualifications awarded at each level and pathways from one NFQ level to the next. It is a 10 level system. Each level is based on nationally agreed standards of what a learner is expected to know and be able to do after receiving an award.
The NFQ allows you to compare qualifications to help with your choice of programme or course, knowing that it will be recognised at home and abroad.
All qualifications included on the NFQ are listed in the Irish Register of Qualifications. If your qualification was obtained outside Ireland, NARIC Ireland, the National Academic Recognition Information Centre will help you find out how your qualification is understood in Ireland.
It helps learners, employers and education and training providers in the following ways.
Learners: It provides a pathway for progression through education and training.
Employers: It provides a resource for employers to learn more about the qualifications their employees have obtained. The levels are also used as a recruitment tool.
Education & Training providers: It provides for clear identification of qualifications achieved by applicants and may help with credit transfer between programmes and accessing new or additional programmes by the recognition of prior learning.
There are a variety of awards provided by QQI. Learners receive these awards when they have shown that they have achieved the standard of the award at assessment.
A Major award is made up of core ‘components’ and ‘electives’. It is the main class of award made at each level. For example, a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Healthcare.
A Minor award is a unit of learning or ‘component’. You are awarded a Minor award when you reach the standard needed in that subject area. You can build up units of learning at your own pace to combine to achieve a Major award.
Special-purpose awards are made for very specific purposes and are awarded for the achievement of a group of prescribed blocks of learning, generally for specific, relatively narrow purposes.
A good example of a Special Purpose award is QQI Level 6 Regional and Local Guiding. They are generally stand-alone but can build towards the achievement of a major award.
Currently Cenit College only offers minor awards.
The assessment techniques used in Cenit College will depend on the programme. Cenit College will generally use a mix of formative and summative assessment techniques to cater for diverse learning types. The techniques can include the following:
Written time-based examinations
Online time-based examinations
Practical ‘skills’ demonstrations
Projects
Assignments
Learner Record
Portfolio of work
Case Study
Supervisors Report
Grading criteria describes what you as a learner must attain to achieve a particular grade for an award at a particular level. The programmes offered by Cenit College will generally be developed at QQI levels 5 and 6. For QQI programmes Cenit College will use the grading criteria as recommended in the QQI Quality Assuring Assessment Guidelines for Providers (revised 2013).
